Why do startups in Afrika fail? It can be argued that part of the reason is the problem of a lack of knowledge around product management which is compounded by the focus on coding in recent years.
If you have been around the tech startup ecosystem across various Afrikan countries long enough and attended events and workshops you’ll likely hear someone mention that 90% of startups fail. This number is most times said as if it is a scientific rule of nature that we must accept like gravity.
The reality is it isn’t.
Often times, when people speak about 90% of startups fail very few have ever applied their mind to the root cause of startup failures, especially across Afrika within the first 3 to 5 years of starting up. The root cause (not the only cause) of early-stage startup failure especially in Afrika is mainly because the founding team doesn’t have someone experienced enough in product management and product development. The problem is made worse by the current trend of emphasizing coding.
