Tuesday after 14:00 saw a second significant outage of FNB South Africa's card payments, mobile app, and Internet banking, according to user-sourced services outage portal Downdetector.

This is the second outage in less than a week after all of its online-based banking services and card payments were unavailable for hours earlier on July 1, 2022. The most recent batch of complaints was made as early as 9:00 on July 6, Wednesday morning, and was logged under the keywords  "Online Banking," "Mobile Banking," and "Mobile Login."

Twitter was abuzz as many FNB consumers used it to express their annoyance at the hassles imposed by banks.

“Any customer who continues to experience issues with our services can contact us directly for assistance,” the bank said.

Outages in banking

Online banking disruptions are becoming an unsettlingly frequent phenomenon in South Africa. On May 8, 2022, Standard Bank SA acknowledged that 4 hours of their systems were down.

This unacceptable trend solicited the resignation of the head of IT engineering at Standard Bank, Alpheus Mangale.
