During a press conference to launch Arkadia Mall, a shopping center in Egypt that specializes in wholesale mobile devices and accessories, it was mentioned that computer sales in Egypt grew to 500,000 in 2020. The announcement was made by Ali Tolba, Chairperson of the Delta Company, as he also added that the significant increase in computer sales in Egypt could be attributed to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The total computer hardware sales during 2020 in Egypt came to a total of approximately EGP 3,8bn, about $240 million. What is interesting is that mobile phone and accessories sales dropped during 2020 in Egypt.
“The mobile market in Egypt declined by between 4%-5% during 2020, as the volume of sales of smartphones and accessories reached about EGP 47bn. The number of phones sold annually reached 19.5m units," said Ali Tolba, Chairperson of the Delta Company and owner of the RadioShack chain of stores, at the launch of Arkadia Mall.
Effects of COVID-19 pandemic on digital device sales
As echoed by Tolba, the COVID-19 pandemic could be the main reason that computer hardwares sales increased in Egypt. This is especially true if you consider the various lockdowns implemented and the number of organizations urging their employees to work from home.
This argument is also supported when you look at the report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), which shed some light on the money that Kenyans spent on telecommunication equipment that would help support remote work. Similar to Egypt, sales of digital devices increased significantly during 2020 in East African country.
Mall dedicated to mobile accessories and devices in Egypt
The announcement of computer and mobile phone and accessories sales during 2020 in Egypt was made during the launch of Arkadia Mall, a shopping center dedicated to wholesale mobile devices and accessories in Egypt. The mall was launched by the Association of Mobile Accessories Importers.
Egypt's Association of Mobile Accessories Importers includes the largest wholesalers and importers specializing in mobile accessories.
During his talk at the press conference, Tolba also indicated that the volume of sales in Egypt’s mobile phone market was 50% of the total electronics market in the country as far as sales are concerned.
