Mercury Bet look over the final sporting action of 2020, as well as a preview of their exciting Lotto prize draw!
Champions League draw
The draw for the next round of the Champions League has been made. Neymar meets his former side Barcelona for the first time since he left the Nou Camp in 2017. Chelsea take on Atletico while another English side, Liverpool, play last season’s semi-finalists RB Leipzig. Champions Bayern Munich have been drawn against Lazio.
There have been some casualties, though. Serie A giants Inter Milan came fourth in Group B, picking up just one win from six games against Real Madrid, Monchengladbach and Shakhtar Donetsk. That outcome means that they have not participated in the round of 16 since 2011-12!
Meanwhile, Manchester United have dropped to the Europa League after they finished third in Group H. This comes as a surprise after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side beat PSG and RB Leipzig in their opening two games. However, they lost three of their following four fixtures to finish third in the standings and will now face Real Sociedad in the Europa League knockout stages. Can the Red Devils win the whole competition?
Back in the Premier League
The focus for England’s biggest teams returns to the Premier League. Injuries to Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez has left Liverpool’s defence weaker, and a run of poor results away from home suggests that they will not find it as easy as they did last season.
Similarly, Manchester City are struggling for goals. Pep Guardiola’s side have been the top scorers in each of the last three campaigns but are yet to reach their potential in 2020-21. Will the return of Sergio Aguero change that? The Argentine is the club’s all-time top scorer and, at 32, still knows how to find the net. Given the quality of his team mates, it’s not too late to rule him out of the race for the Golden Boot.
Could this open the door for Tottenham to win a first title in 60 years? Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min are challenging Sadio Mane and Mo Salah for their crown as the league best attacking duo. Jose Mourinho has been a champion on three occasions already – can he make it four?
The NBA is back!
There’s even better news in America as the NBA returns on December 22nd! Last season saw Los Angeles Lakers beat Miami Heat 4-2 in the finals to win their 17th championship thanks to MVP LeBron James. The Lakers are back in action on the opening day of the new NBA season as they take on their local rivals, the Clippers. These are the only two sides in the NBA that share the same stadium! At least LeBron won’t have far to travel…
