In news that will leave gamers both curious and excited with anticipation, Microsoft and Sony have announced that they will partner on gaming and Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions. will explore joint development of future cloud solutions in Microsoft Azure to support their respective game and content-streaming services.

The two companies have also added that they will explore the use of Microsoft Azure datacenter-based solutions for Sony’s game and content-streaming services.

For many years, Microsoft has been a key business partner for us, though of course the two companies have also been competing in some areas. I believe that our joint development of future cloud solutions will contribute greatly to the advancement of interactive content. Additionally, I hope that in the areas of semiconductors and AI, leveraging each company’s cutting-edge technology in a mutually complementary way will lead to the creation of new value for society,” said Kenichiro Yoshida, president and CEO of Sony.

Game of consoles

Microsoft, which is the maker of the Xbox range of gaming consoles, and Sony, better known for the PlayStation range of gaming consoles, both hold well over 80% of the global gaming consoles market share with Nintendo in a distant 3rd place. This partnership, depending on the details, could see both of them further entrenching themselves in the gaming sector.

It is not clear how the agreement will affect each company's specific gaming experiences or if it will even allow for players on either gaming network to play with each other.
