DSTV and Showmax have announced that DSTV premium subscribers in South Africa will receive Showmax for free. Both DSTV and Showmax are owned by South Africa technology investment company, Naspers.

The announcement comes a few weeks after reports surfaced that Naspers is going ahead to merge DSTV Digital Media division with Showmax Africa.

“More and more customers are telling us they love to binge-watch box sets on DStv Catch Up and Showmax. It’s the way the world is moving and that’s why we’re offering all our Premium customers Showmax, so they can enjoy this exceptional experience,” said Mark Rayner, CEO at Multichoice South Africa.

DSTV subscribers in South Africa will now be able to access Showmax via their DSTV Explora decoder, and the DSTV Now app on their PC, laptop, mobile device, media player or smart TV. Subscribers will be allowed to access the service on two different devices simultaneously.

The announcement makes sense given that not only are both companies owned by Naspers but also that it made no sense for DSTV to build it's own app for streaming video.
